What are the various classifications for commercial pools?
"Commercial" is a broad classification. There are semi-public pools such as pools in apartment or other residential communities or at hotels and motels. There is also a classification for pubic pools which include municipal pools or pools that charge admission to the public. Lastly, there are public pools that are designated for schools, colleges, universities and also for competition.
What are the special requirement for commercial pools?
The state and city requirements are extensive. Higher filtration rates, 24-hour circulation, minimum decking width, ADA requirements, are just a few of the literally hundreds of special requirement for commercial pools. Contact our design team for an analysis of your particular project.
If you build a pool at an apartment complex, is it considered a public pool.
Yes, and it is subject to state and city requirements.
Are there any on going inspections required with commercial pools?
The health department requires daily testing of the water chemistry. Health officials will perform an annual inspection of the swimming pool facility and review testing records.
Do I need to hire an architect to build a commercial pool?
Depending on the scope of the job, in many cases an architect is hired to design the facility surrounding the pool. Typically, our team is engaged to design the swimming pool and its piping and filtration system.
Are there any special filtration or sanitation needs on a commercial pool?
Yes, depending on the classification of the commercial pool and its intended use, filtration flow rates and sizing are calculated. All commercial pools are required to have some type of a semi-automatic or automatic sanitation system.
What is the best type of filter to put on a commercial pool?
Our experience has shown that the easiest filter to maintain in a commercial pool is a high rate sand filter. There are also very strict backwashing requirements so you should contact our design team to discuss these specific issues.
What kinds of energy-saving devices are available for commercial pools?
There are some high-efficiency energy-saving pumps and motors available today. Natural gas heating systems are typically only 80% efficient, but there are some newer systems available that will exceed 95% efficiency.
What is the most durable surface to put on the decking of a commercial pool?
The most advanced acrylic coatings are generally preferred in a commercial environment. There are several manufacturers of these coatings. Your specific design needs and project budget will direct your choice. Excell deck and Miracoat are two of the most popular options.
What is the most durable interior finish to put on a commercial pool?
The new 100% quartz interior finishes are the most durable but traditional white marble plaster is still often used because it is less costly.
Is an overflow gutter required on all commercial pools?
No. The commercial building code allows for surface skimmers on commercial pools but overflow gutters are a much more efficient method of removing surface debris and creating a better circulation system.
Does it take longer to build a commercial pool?
Yes, a commercial pool has a much more involved permitting and approval process because there are so many more specific requirements and restrictions. In addition, project duration may be longer due to the sheer size of the project. Smaller, semi-public apartment and other community pools are typically built, however, within the time frames of standard residential pools.
